Maternity Photography-Capturing the Magic of Pregnancy

Years ago, no woman in her right mind would have considered baring her pregnant belly for the world to see.  Times have changed!  Semi-nude maternity photography is now a form of art - one that all expecting moms should consider.  Not only a beautiful keepsake, it also makes you feel sexy at a time when you weren't sure you'd ever feel that way again.

"When I see a pregnant woman, I always see beauty, but sometimes pregnant women have a difficult time seeing themselves this way," said Jennifer Loomis, a nationally known pregnancy photographer in San Francisco.  "My job is not only to make captivating photographs of them, it's to show them their own beauty and empower them to accept and embrace their bodies."

Best done late in the third trimester, here's what to consider when planning your maternity photography:

  •       Look for someone with extensive experience in pregnancy photography, and preferably someone who specializes in it.  Many photographers will tack it on as part of their overall services, but pregnancy photography involves a deep understanding of how to get certain poses to work with different body types that is only gained over time.

  •      The photographer should also be experienced in and comfortable with talking with women about their bodies and getting a good feel for what they like...and don't like.

  •       Consider both artistry and personality - find a photographer whose work you love and whose personality fits with your own.  Shedding any part of your clothing for the camera is an intimate experience, so the person behind that camera should make you feel as comfortable as possible.
