Diaper Bag Essentials

Packing a diaper bag for a baby can be a challenge. The first few times we mustered up enough courage to venture outside with our infant, I packed the diaper to capacity with one or more of nearly everything in her nursery - several changes of clothes, burp cloths, bibs, and more bottles than she could possibly have gone through during the two hours we were away. Not only was the bag heavy and difficult to maneuver with (especially when also hauling a baby in a carrier and other items), it was so full that if was nearly impossible to find anything in it without dumping out other items and potentially losing them.

After a few times of this, most parents learn to start paring down the diaper bag contents to the essentials, plus a few extra items. You can even have two diaper bags - one for short trips and one for longer periods away from home.

Here is my list of diaper bag essentials:

  • Bottles and formula. If you are bottle feeding, bring more than enough of this. My rule of thumb is: pack as much as you think you will need, then throw in one more.

  • Diapers and wipes.

  • A spare outfit (and one for you if there is room - you never know when you might get spit up on, or worse, and need a quick change of clothes).

  • A disposable camera. If your cell phone or PDA has a camera feature, great - if not, be sure to pack a disposable camera to capture those memories that happen away from home.

  • Medical records. Most hospitals and pediatrician offices give out miniature medical records books. Keep it updated and in the diaper bag so you always have it on hand.

  • Medications. Always have on hand any medications your baby needs to take. The last thing you need is to be stranded somewhere without his or her necessary medications.

  • A new or infrequently used toy. Pack a toy that will seem new to your baby.

  • A bib and burp cloth or two, and two or more receiving blankets.

  • A snack and bottle of water for you.

Another tip: keep the diaper bag packed at all times. That way, when you are heading out the door you can just grab the bag and go. Refill items when you return home each time.

Packing for a baby can be overwhelming, but if you stick to these essentials, you'll have what you need - without bringing the entire nursery with you.
